Colors

Have you ever wondered how we perceive colors? Have you ever wondered why there are about fifty shades of grey?

If you have wondered, then, just skip to the start.

Think of something. Maybe, an apple. Generally, an apple(not considering green apples or other color combos) is red in color. Yes, it appears to be red but it actually isn't red. It is just how perceive it.

Let's get into the science(or more exactly to the physics) of this.

The best way to deal with science(or physics) is to start asking questions.

First question. How do we see things around us?

The light from the sun(or any other source) falls on an object and is then reflected back to our eyes. From the eyes to the brain, a tedious process, which I will not venture into.

All of this happens within nanoseconds as you know light travels at the speed of 30,00,00,000 meters per second(remember, we had this by heart as 3x10^8 m/s), and your brain processes data from your eye within picoseconds.

The irony is that, so much is going on and we aren't really bothered, are we?

Moving on. Second question. How do we see colors?

The light from the sun or light in general is a composition of all the colors.

When light falls on any object, the object absorbs some wavelengths of light and reflect some. Wavelengths, seems to be too big a word. Just, replace them with colors for easy understanding.

The reflected wavelength(or color) reaches our eye and is processed by the brain as the color of the object.

So, if an object reflects all the wavelengths(or colors) of light falling on it, it appears to be white. If an object absorbs all wavelengths(or colors) of light falling on it and reflects nothing, it appears to be black.

The Start

I remember someone whispering in my ears that black and white are not actually colors. He or she(I don't remember) said white to be the presence of all colors and black to be the absence of all colours.

Knowing all this, let me give you a question to linger for the rest of your day. Are Black and white, colors or not?
